You can spend years conjugating verbs in a classroom at home, or you can order your morning coffee in English, get directions to the beach in English, and argue about football with new friends in English. Learning English abroad means studying the language in an English-speaking country, where structured lessons are combined with daily real-world practice, so that what you learn in the classroom is immediately reinforced through immersion. Since 1983, SPRACHCAFFE Languages Plus has run CEFR-aligned English courses, from beginner A1 to proficient C2, for teenagers and adults in Malta, the United Kingdom, Canada, and South Africa.

English Courses & Camps Overseas
I love my experience in this hotel. Very friendly and polite staff, always with a smile and trying to help you. They offer to students a variety of activities to discover Malta and meet people everyday. Stanley as a manager of the place, is very nice and funny, and super good guide for trips!! Also, Alcides, responsible of activities of adult people, he was very dinamic and care about the students. It was a pleasure to spend one week there because I shared my experience with very interesting people and I felt at home. Thanks for everything, hoping to come back soon!

Why learning English abroad works
Immersion compresses the timeline. Decades of research on second-language acquisition show that effective learning combines comprehensible input, the listening and reading that build understanding (Krashen, 1985), with comprehensible output, the speaking and writing that turn understanding into active fluency (Swain, 1985). In an English-speaking country this balance happens almost by itself, because every ordinary task, from buying a bus ticket to chatting with a host family, becomes language practice.
The numbers make the difference clear. Cambridge Assessment English estimates that a learner needs roughly 200 guided hours of study to progress one CEFR level. Home study spreads those hours thinly across many months. An intensive course abroad, with 20 to 30 lessons each week plus constant daily use of the language, typically delivers the same progress in about 8 to 12 weeks of full-time study. The textbook is not what changes; the hours of authentic exposure around the lessons are.
Three things give an English immersion course abroad its edge over learning at home:
- Authentic exposure. You hear native accents, idioms, and regional variation that no textbook reproduces, which trains your ear for real communication.
- Confidence. A few weeks of handling daily life in English builds more speaking confidence than months of grammar drills in isolation.
- Speed. Formal lessons plus constant practice move you through the CEFR levels faster than study at home.
Lifelong bilingualism is associated with enhanced executive function - attentional control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility - across the lifespan, according to research by Bialystok and colleagues published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences (2012). For adult English learners, this translates into measurable transferable cognitive skills beyond the language itself.

Speak English from day one
Communicative practice, not grammar exercises alone, is what turns classroom knowledge into active fluency. At SPRACHCAFFE, native-speaker teachers cover grammar and vocabulary in class, and the international mix of nationalities means the practice never stops when the lesson ends. Because classmates often share no other common language, English quickly becomes the natural way to make friends, and friendship is one of the fastest routes to fluency.
English courses for adults and camps for teenagers
Adults and younger learners approach a language differently, so the two formats are built around different goals. Both are CEFR-aligned and start with a placement test on the first day, so every learner is grouped by ability rather than age alone.
English courses for adults (18 and above) give clear targets and measurable progress in a flexible structure. You can choose a Standard Course of 20 lessons per week or an Intensive Course of 30 lessons for faster development, and exam preparation or specialised workshops add 10 focused lessons per week. Classes are small, with a maximum that varies by school and course and is commonly between 10 and 15 students. Adult English courses abroad are available in Malta, England, Canada and South Africa.
English camps for teenagers (ages 12 to 17) pair a 20-lesson Standard Course with a fully supervised activity programme, because fluency at this age grows inside and outside the classroom. Lessons run in international groups, which turns English into the shared language between new friends from around the world, while afternoons bring sports, excursions, and social events. Under-18s have full supervision and a structured daily schedule. English language camps are available Malta, England, and Canada.
Every course follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the international standard used to describe language ability on a six-level scale:
| Level | Stage | What you can typically do |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Beginner | Understand and use everyday phrases and simple sentences. |
| A2 | Elementary | Communicate in simple, routine situations and describe your background. |
| B1 | Intermediate | Handle most travel situations and produce connected text on familiar topics. |
| B2 | Upper intermediate | Interact fluently with native speakers and discuss a wide range of subjects. |
| C1 | Advanced | Use the language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes. |
| C2 | Proficient | Understand virtually everything and express yourself precisely and naturally. |

United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is the world's most popular destination for English-language study, with an estimated 38% share of the global market in 2024 according to industry analysts BONARD, and the trade body English UK reports 309 accredited English-language teaching centres across the country. Studying here means learning the language where it originated, surrounded by history, landmarks, and modern city life.
Malta
In Malta, English is an official language, so lessons come wrapped in a Mediterranean lifestyle and a strong international student community. According to Malta's National Statistics Office, Malta is one of only two of the world's top eight English-study destinations to surpass pre-pandemic enrolment levels, the other being Ireland, which signals a sustained international demand for the island as a study base.
Canada
Canada offers a welcoming, multicultural setting that pairs relaxed city life with easy access to nature. It suits learners who want to build confidence quickly in a calm, modern, English-speaking environment.
South Africa
Cape Town combines dramatic landscapes, cultural diversity, and excellent value, with English widely spoken in everyday life. This destination is offered to adult learners.
The United Kingdom is the world's most popular destination for English-language study, with an estimated 38% global market share in 2024 (BONARD). The country's 309 English-language teaching centres span every region of the UK, with particularly significant concentrations in London, Brighton, Bournemouth, Camden, Eastbourne, and other coastal and historic cities.

The career and cognitive value of English
English skills carry measurable benefits beyond the language itself. Peer-reviewed research finds wage premiums of roughly 5 to 15% for English-language skills in non-English-speaking labour markets (Liwiński, 2019, Empirica). According to the European Commission's Eurobarometer survey, 85% of European parents consider English the most important foreign language for their children's future.
The advantages are cognitive as well as professional. Lifelong bilingualism is associated with stronger executive function, including attentional control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility across the lifespan, according to research by Bialystok and colleagues in Trends in Cognitive Sciences (2012). For an adult learner, that points to transferable mental skills that reach well beyond grammar and vocabulary.
Recognised English certificates
At the end of any course you receive a SPRACHCAFFE certificate confirming your level and participation. If you need an internationally recognised qualification, SPRACHCAFFE prepares students for the major English exams:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is delivered jointly by the British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge Assessment English and is recognised by thousands of organisations worldwide. It is the most common requirement for university and visa applications in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and results are valid for two years.
- TOEFL iBT, produced by ETS, is the test most often required for university admission in the United States and is accepted at thousands of institutions across more than 160 countries. Results are valid for two years.
- Cambridge English Qualifications, awarded by Cambridge Assessment English at the University of Cambridge, include B2 First and C1 Advanced. Unlike most exams, these certificates do not expire.
Two further qualifications are widely used in the wider field of English testing, though preparation is not offered at every school: TOEIC (ETS), which focuses on workplace English, and Pearson PTE Academic, a fully digital, computer-scored test accepted for UK and Australian visa applications.

Working while studying is generally not permitted on short-stay tourist or Schengen visas. UK and Canadian student visas may allow limited part-time work - typically up to 20 hours per week during term time - depending on course length and visa type.
SPRACHCAFFE provides enrolment confirmations and supporting documentation for visa applications, and guides students through the process. Final responsibility for visa eligibility rests with each country's immigration authority.
